Floating low/Don't Spill the beans
Type of Event: Individual (one - two students)
Description of Event:
Part I - Floating Low: The student will construct and float a barge that carries a maximum number of smaller objects.
Part II - Don't Spill the Beans: The students will be given a supply of items from which to build a safe way to transport 12 beans over a 20-meter canyon.

Scoring:
Part I & II - 1st place teams will earn points equivalent to the number of teams participating with each successive place earning minus one point.
Overall - The combined score from both parts will be used to determine the overall winner. In the event of a tie, the tie breaker will be based on the points earned in the floating low competition.

Part I - Floating Low:
- Each student will be provided with one square aluminum foil, 15 cm on a side, and two standard paper clips.
- Student may bring a scissors and ruler if desired. No other materials may be used.
- Student will have 15 minutes to construct the device.
- Each device must float in a 5-gallon bucket, which is half full of water.
- The student will add penny-size metal objects one at a time until the device sinks.
- Judges will count the number of objects in the barge when it sinks.
- Two students work as a team for this competition.
- Students are not allowed to throw the beans.
